Where Set Designers Find the Real Thing

Set design lives or dies on authenticity. A period drama needs a fireplace that actually belonged to that era. An industrial thriller needs shelving with genuine rust and wear. A rural Irish scene needs farm salvage that didn’t come off a printer or out of a foam mould. The difference between a set that convinces and one that doesn’t is almost always in the sourcing.

EuroSalve has been one of Ireland’s go-to salvage sources for the trade since 1998. With 90,000 square feet of genuine architectural salvage, period furniture, industrial pieces and decorative items in Kilkenny, we give set designers access to the kind of stock that makes a brief genuinely achievable — not just approximately right. Everything here is real. Nothing is a reproduction.

Architectural Elements That Transform a Set

The bones of a set — the doors, windows, fireplaces, flooring, beams, ironwork — are what define its period and place more than any prop or dressing item. We stock original doors and windows spanning Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian periods, cast iron fireplaces, reclaimed timber beams, stone architectural features, cast iron radiators, entrance gates and railings and reclaimed flooring — all genuine salvage with the age and detail that set construction teams need to get a space looking right.

These pieces work both as functional set elements and as reference material for set builders replicating specific periods. Conor from our team works closely with architects and construction professionals and is well placed to help set designers find the right architectural pieces for a specific brief. Call or email and we’ll take it from there.

Dressing Pieces Across Every Category

Beyond the architecture, it’s the dressing that makes a set feel inhabited — and this is where our stock genuinely stands apart. We carry taxidermy, religious and devotional artefacts, vintage post boxes, cast iron animals, agricultural and farm salvage, vintage lighting, antique mirrors, unusual medical and scientific instruments, church fittings and a miscellaneous salvage category that covers items from centuries of Irish and European domestic, industrial and institutional life.

Most of what we stock is completely one-of-a-kind. Set designers who visit the yard regularly say the same thing — they come in with a brief and leave with things they didn’t know they needed. Stock turns over constantly, so if you have an ongoing production or a series of projects, it’s worth building a regular relationship with us so you’re first to know when relevant pieces arrive.

Visit the Yard — See It Yourself

Photos only tell part of the story with salvage. Scale, texture, condition and the sheer variety of what’s available is something that lands very differently when you’re standing in the yard. Many of our most regular set design customers make the trip to Kilkenny precisely because walking the stock in person is the fastest and most effective way to fulfil a complex brief.

We’re on the Bleach Road in Kilkenny — accessible from Dublin in under two hours, and straightforward from Waterford, Cork and Limerick. Call ahead before you visit so we can make sure Robin or one of the team is available to take you around properly. For briefs that can’t wait for a site visit, email us the details and we’ll come back with photos, dimensions and availability same day where possible.
